Overview: The Laboratory of Biomedical Materials and Devices (LBMD) at the College of Engineering (COE) of Peking University (PKU) is an interdisciplinary research group initiated and leaded by Professor Yufeng Zheng since 2004. We work extensively on the biomedical materials and their applications in dentistry, orthopedics and interventional therapy. Biomaterials research is an exciting and rapidly growing field. A definition given by Dr. David F. Williams(Biomaterials 30(30):5897-5909) is

“A biomaterial is a substance that has been engineered to take a form which, alone or as part of a complex system, is used to direct, by control of interactions with components of living systems, the course of any therapeutic or diagnostic procedure, in human or veterinary medicine. ”

Starting from the fundamental microstructures and compositions of biomaterials, and extending to the evaluation, design and development of biomedical devices and instruments, we, although a small group, are dedicated to contribute our effort and knowledge to the forefront of this field.

Research Themes:

Currently we are working on several interesting topics of biomaterials including: I development of novel biomaterials including (1) biodegradable magnesium and iron based alloys; (2) new biomedical Titanium alloys; (3) new bulk metallic glass for potential biomedical application; (4) new nanostructured biomedical materials (nanoparticle, nanowire, nanotube, nanocrstalline bulk materials); II characterization of microstructures and mechanical properties of the materials; III biocompatibility evaluation of materials; IV application and design of biomedical devices.

Group members:

Our group has fully involved researchers from different academic backgrounds, including material science, medical science, chemistry and mechanical engineering. Each of us focuses on a specific area and meanwhile collaborates comprehensively with other teammates, which highlights the interdisciplinary feature of our research group. Inspired by the spirit of creation and guided by the freedom belief originated from PKU, we have shaped a relaxed and active working and communicating atmosphere, where every student participates and also benefits.
